Same maker, same quality work, broader studio focus. Karl J. Schmidt Studio operates as a research-based studio practice. The work at the bench and the work in the archive are part of the same craft — each informing the other.
I am presently engaged in continuing work on the Thomas Passmore Project — an archive-based reconstruction of an early American tinware manufactory operating in Philadelphia from 1792 to 1809. This work involves the transcription and analysis of thousands of manuscript entries and forms the foundation for future pieces, designs, and historically grounded studies produced in the shop.
If you would like to follow the work as it develops, you can do so from a dedicated website. Ongoing research from the Thomas Passmore Project is being published here: www.thomaspassmore.org
Orders are currently open. We have a limited seasonal release of hand-made tin ornaments and traditional tinsel.
